Midland
- Midland High swept
the season series
against Mt. Pleasant on
Friday night, 59-53.
Both teams battled it
out blow for blow in the
first half with Midland
High holding a 1 point
advantage at the break.
Trey Zeigler and Kyle
Wakeman led the Oilers
and Chemics respectively
with 8 points a piece.
The Chemics took charge
in the third quarter and
never trailed again.
The third quarter became
the Kelvin Carter and
Andy Angus show for
Midland. The pair
fed each other with
great teamwork and
combined for 13 points
in the quarter.
Andrew Thomas kept the
Oilers in it with 6
third quarter points of
his own. The
Oilers got to within 1
with 6:23 to go in the
game on an Eric Layfield
offensive rebound and
put-back. It was
the closest that they go
as Midland High kept
their cool down the
stretch and hit just
enough free throws to
ice it at 59-53.
Zeigler led all scorers
with 17, while his
teammate Thomas had 10.
Angus led the Chemics
with 14, Wakeman had 13,
Dan Wright had 12 and
Carter was held to just
11 but contributed in
other big ways.
With the win, the
Chemics stay in third
place but can't catch
Saginaw High at this
point but can still
finish in 2nd with wins
in their last two Valley
games and a Flint S.W.A.
loss. Both teams
are in the Mt. Pleasant
districts when the
tournament starts and
will be favored to meet
in the district final.
